Health & Safety Management
Our Ship Recycling Facility provides a comprehensive description of the Facility’s plans and procedures for safeguarding worker health and safety and reflects the applicable requirements of the Hong Kong Convention & our national legislation, i.e., the Gujarat Pollution Control Board
Ensuring the health and wellbeing of our employees is our priority. Hence, we conduct regular health check ups and maintain extensive records of their medical history.Each of our employees have comprehensive health insurance plans thus protecting them from unforeseen circumstances.
Given our high health and safety standards on site, we have been appraised and appreciated by various organizations like Red Cross. They have sent delegations to inspect the working environment, and the employee health & safety conditions at our facility.
Our Health & Safety plans
- Each vessel is landed before the plot to avoid any accidents on the front yard
- The shipping company provides us the IHM (Inventory of Hazardous Materials) reports
- Additional sampling is conducted by us
- The IHM reports are discussed by our HSE team to identify the hazardou waste and then conduct labelling work.
- Doctors from Red Cross monitor the health of the workers periodically
- Separate infrastructure is created for dealing with hazardous materials
- We appoint specialized agencies for the handling of asbestos
- Our gears and open-revolving-machinery involved with winch construction are regularly audited and certified
- Workers supervising wire ropes behind the winch are always wearing PPEs
- Wire ropes are stored in trays to avoid contamination
- Competent personnel as per legal requirements regularly carry out winch inspection: wire ropes, shackles, etc
- Each crane is regularly maintained and is kept in good working condition
- Protective glass sheets are fitted on the cranes
- The crane driver and guide maintain an audible horn and a smooth mode of communication between them.
- Competent authorities regularly inspect load testing, hooks and shackles
- Gas cutters at work on ship utilize safety belts
- Only trained gas c-utters are permitted to go on board for cutting
- Constant supervision and helpers when working at heights

Workers are assigned and only perform work for which they have the required level of skill, knowledge and training. All workers, including contractors and their workers, casual workers, day labour and migrant workers, are:
- Sufficiently educated and trained in the tasks they are assigned to and possess the relevant skill certificates;
- Suitably instructed about the hazards connected with their work and environment, as well as trained in the precautions necessary to avoid accidents and injuries to health;
- Made aware of the relevant laws, regulations, requirements, codes of practice, instructions relating to prevention of accidents and diseases;
- Informed of their individual and collective responsibility for safety and health;
- Sufficiently instructed in the correct use and effects of PPE and its appropriate care, and have training made available to them, as appropriate.
The required level of skill and knowledge are defined and objectively assessed through skills testing leading to certification by an authorized body recognized by competent authorities. This procedure is integrated with formal training or conducted at the worksite.
ILO i.e., International Labour Organization is a multi-governmental organization consisting of various work and labour guidelines for healthy work practices. In 2003, guidelines were provided for Asian countries and Turkey regarding safe and healthy ship breaking practices. At Salasar Balaji, we follow all the following norms and requisites, including:
- Reporting of work related incidents and diseases
- Regular Health check-ups of our workers -Management of hazardous substances
- Training staff and workers periodically
- Emergency vigilance and welfare of our employees
Our Emergency Plan states that all employees on the yard are provided with specific guidelines and mock drills for effective control in times of crisis.
Alarm:
An alarm is installed on the yard and at the office that alerts the employees instantly in times of emergency situations.
Fire Fighting System:
In the front yard we have a fire fighting pump with a hydrant system connected to 08 hydrants located at various locations. The backyard hosts firefighting equipment at various locations to ensure maximum safety.
Mock Drills:
Mock drills are periodically conducted to ensure that all the workers are regularly kept updated to effectively handle crisis situations.
